INSURANCE RATES.
The prospect of securing a reduction in the fire premiums in Mastertou does not appear to be bright. The State Fire Ofliee has seized upon the Central Hotel as an excuse for declining to reduce the premiums—for that is what the general manager’s letter to the Borough Council amounts to. Me aie forced to tlic conclusion that if every building in Mastertou was built entirely of asbestos, the insurance companies would even then decline to reduce the premiums, possibly giving as a reason that the heat of the sun might become so strong that the buildings would molt into thin air! It is indeed pleasing to have the patronising assurance of the manager of the State Fire Office that he will visit Mastertou “in the next few months,” and go into the question. The treatment which policy-hol-ders arc receiving in the matter of insurance charges is such that the time is not far distant when the mercantile establishments and house-owners will join together and arrange their own tiro risks. The farmers have their own company to cover fire risks, so why not the residents of a borough?
