A BOROUGH COUNCIL TO A WORTHY OBJECT.' At- the Borpugli Council meeting last evening the Mayor (Mr W. 11. Jaevson') brought forward a request by the Central Schools’ Library . Committee for a grant towards the library. The. Mayor referred to the value, a good library Was tfi school children, and ■'stressed the importance of making a grant to such; a worthy object. - Cr. Burridge: “It seems to me that we are siniplx r inundated with applications from every possible kind of society, associaton or corporation, asking for funds.”. He drew attention to the state of the borough finances, and said that- as custodians of the ratepayers’ purse they could not make grants for every request that came befo.ro the Council.
The Mayor:; “The Wellington. City Council spends some £3OO a year on a similar library. Surely xve should be able to make a small grant to such a xvorthv object. I think the money would' be xvell spent.” Cr. O’Leary: “Will you move a resolution, your Worship?” The Mayor: “Yes, I xvill move that the. Council grant £lO to the library.” Cr. O’Leary: “Cr. Burridge lias a narroxv-miuded way of putting it when ho suggests that "a municipality like. Masterton cannot afford a small grant of £lO. Cr. Burridge lias completed his education, but there are many to-day who have not. I am surprised at the utterances of Cr. Burridge.” The motion was carried.
