TRUST LANDS TRUST.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust was hold last evening. The Town Clerk forwarded a report of the superintendent of the Fire Brigade re placing firemen at escape doors at the Opera House. A letter was also received from the Fire Inspector regarding the condition of the fire hose at the Opera House. It was decided, to request the lessees to fulfil the conditions of agreement with the Trust forthwith. The Masterton branch of the Public Trust Office wrote in connection with the appointment of Mr R. Brown as valuer for the Public Trustee m Nora Timms’ estate, and asking the Trustees to appoint a valuer. The appointment of Mr R. Brown was approved of, and the Trustees decided to appoint Mr d. B. Keith as their valuer. A request from Miss Madeley in connection with her matriculation grant was referred to the Education Committee for a -recommendation.

In reply to a request from the Masterton Citizens’ Band, desiring a grant of £25, it was decided to obtain a copv of the band's balance sheet. Mr James Atkinson wrote, applying to the trustees for the sum of £lO as half the cost of dividing a boarded fence between his property and the Trust property. If was decided to refer the matter to the Trust’s solicitor for a report. Monsignor McKenna forwarded an application for the lease of part T. A. 41, allotments 9 and 11. The matter was referred to a special meeting of the Trust, to be held on Friday evening. A deputation representing the Cameron Park and Soldiers’ Memorial Committee waited upon the Trust and requested a donation towards the funds. Mr W. Kemp stated that the deputation was present to solicit support for additional playing grounds for the youth of the town. A site had been selected for a monument in the Masterton Park, and it was proposed to erect a memorial there at a cost of about £2OOO. He would like to see the Trustees assist the Cameron Park Committee to cany on its scheme, as additional playing grounds were badly' needed in Masterton.

Mr W. D. Horne supported the remarks of Mr Kemp. Masterton was a disgrace to humanity regarding the facilities it offered for educating a healthy body. The French Governmc.tn had made it compulsory for football to be played in its army. In New Zealand that was not considered necessary'. He hoped the Trustees would see their way clear to assist in the Cameron Park Committee’s scheme. Mr E. G. Eton thought it advisable that an_v discussion in connection with the matter should be held over until a representative of the Trust had been appointed to the controlling body of the Cameron Park. Any' action of sucl) a representative would no doubt possess the confidence and receive the support of the Trustees. The Trust, however, was not as wealthy' as many, people supposed it to be. The chairman said that probably' after next meeting' a reply' would be given the deputation.

A deputation representing the Mastodon West School Committee w'aited upon the Trustees and requested a donation towards the purchase of a piano. Mr Alex. Donald stressed the great drawbacks school committees laboured under at the present time. They were usually pinched for funds te carrv on their w'ork. There should be a desire to cultivate the artistic sense. The Masterton West school desired a piano, and to obtain an instrument had been assisted by local residents to the extent of £25. The committee requested a grant of £25 towards the fund.

Mr E. G. Eton, in moving that Ihe necessary sum be granted, said he thought that the instrument was necessary. The proviso should be made, however, that the grant should carry a Government subsidy, and he decided to add that to his motion. This was seconded by Mr W. T. Grundy and unanimously carried. The deputation then withdrew, after thanking the Trustees for the generous manner in which it had been received.
