NEW ZEALAND WOOL AND MUTTON.

Statements which we have previously made to the effect that the price of New Zealand sheep and wool would not long remain at high prices is borne out by the news received from England during the past day or two. Owing to the muddling, or something worse, of the Government at Home—which played directly into the hands of the American Meat Trust—New Zealand mutton was released on the market in a very stale state, with the result that the demand lias been limited. In other words, the people, of England have been deliberately forced by the English Government to eat English and American mutton at high prices, and to eschew New Zealand mutton, which, prior to the war, was coming greatly into favour with the English consumer. The latter, hftwever, resents having stale New Zealand pnutton foisted upon him, and, consequently in future he will not purchase our produce—which, of course, is the* object

at the back of the. mind of the Gov-, eminent, at Home. Thus is New Zealand’s .'patriotism rewarded. Then, again, tlie wool market is being manipulated in a manner which will not be 7 to our advantage. It is very evident that the sheep farmer will, during the next year or two, be compelled to rely more upon the local market .-than the'; Homf market.
