WOMEN’S HOSTEL.
COMMITTEE FORMED IN MASTERTON. At the Social Hall of the .Municipal Buildings lu .Masterton last night, Nlis Kaye. Dominion president of the Y.NV.C'.A., delivered an address explaining in detail the work ot. the organisation to which she is attached. The Rev. <i. T. Brown, ALA., presided, and the Mayoress (Mrs V . 11.. Jackson) also occupied a position at the official table. Airs Kaye referred to the origin ot the Association, and the manner in which, step by step, it had gradually increased until it held its present position. It was wow a powerful influence for good in many lands. The speaker then went on to refer to the control of the organisation, and incidentally remarked that a field committee had been appointed in New Zealami, thus giving the Dominion partial self-government. Formerly the New Zealand organisation had been attached to that of Australia, or, more precisely speaking, Australasia. Mrs Kave expressed the opinion that much good would be derived from the new arrangement. In each centre in which a branch was established it was necessary to have an advisory board, and, of course, committees! The movement meant work, Put what progress did not mean work? Nothing was achieved ' unless something was attempted. Turning to the question of the erection of a hostel in Masterton, Mrs Kaye stated that as a a hostel, as soon as it got to a certain stage, helped very considerably to pay its own expenses. The charges were always made as moderate as possible. It was the same with the lunches. 1 They were made as moderate as it was possible to charge, although the prices of foods nowadays were very high indeed. Financial help was necessary to carry on the work —that fact was recognised bv all. But in the district of the Wairarapa there was sufficient wealth to run a branch of the Y.W.C.A. When the initial difficulties were surmounted, the speaker felt sure that the work would proceed satisfactorily. The matter of raising funds was a very big question, but nothing was gained unless worked for. In a very modest estimate at least the sum of £6OOO was required to start the work in Masterful. At the present time prices were so high that a less sum could not possibly be managed with. Probably a suitable property could be purchased, but that, of course, was a matter for the meeting to decide. They had also to decide the number of girls to be accommodated. The speaker suggested the appointment of a provisional committee to go into the matter. -
After some discussion, and questions answered by Mrs Kayo, the. following committee'was appointed to go into the matter: —The Mayoress (Airs AY. H. ’.Jackson), and Alesdames J. Caselberg, W. B. Cheimells, T. F. AYatson, Hoskiiio', Wilkinson, Coradinc, A. Daniell, Drummond, N. Miller, H. H. Bcetham, L. Tolimpson, Dr. Helen Ccnvie, tlie Misses Haggett and I. Daniell, and Rev. G. T. Brown, Alessrs J. Caselberg, D. Hcbenton, Drninmoqd, H. E. Hart and Dr. Prior, with power to add. The Mayoress thanked Airs Kaye for her very interesting address, ‘and expressed her pleasure at the .enthusiastic manner in which the women s hostel proposal had been taken up by the meeting. Airs Jackson also moved a hearty vote of thanks to Rev. Air Brown, which was likewise carried unanimously.
