BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING. The Mayor presided over a special meeting ot the Alastcrton Boiough Council last evening. 11 was decided to confirm, the following resolutions: — “That, in pursuance of the powers vested in it by . the Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, and its amendments, to close streets, the Masterton Borough Council hereby, by special order, resolves to close the whole of Marj street, in the borough*of Masterton, from the commencement, thereof at Villa street’’; and “that, in pursuance of the powers vested in it by the Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, and its amendments, to close streets, the Masterton Borough Council hereby, by special order, resolves to close Donald street, in the borough of Masterton, from the commencement thereof at Coekburn street to the intersection thereof by Short street.” Letters were received from the secretaries of the lied Star and Masterton Football Clubs, requesting the use of the Masterton Park oval during tlie coining football season Or. Burridge stated that the clubs did not wish to make a charge, but simply to have the right to take up a collection at the Park gates if necessary. He stated that lie felt the use of the Park would not be restricted in any way if the request was granted, and moved accordingly. The Mayor stated that a cricket pitch had just been put down. It was at present only a seed bod, and if football were played on the oval the pitch would be a quagmire in a very short time.' Cr. Candy, in seconding the motion, said that he was in favour of the request being granted. The oval was for the use of all sport, he stated, and the football clubs should be granted . the privilege of playing on it. The cricket clubg had not spent any money on the ovalf . Regarding the cricket pitch, ho stated that the matter could be remedied in the spring. Cr. King stated that he agreed with the remarks of Cr. Candy, but at the same time some further information in connection with the matter was required by the Council. He moved that a committee be set up to go thoroughly into the matter, and arrange a conference of those concerned, v The amendment was seconded by Cr. AA r atson. -

Speaking to the amendment, Cr. Henderson stated that he was against football being played in the Park. He would vote for the amendment, as he was not in favour of any sports body having control of the oval. The amendment, on being put to the Council, was carried. Two applications for taxi licenses were dealt with. In each case the police forwarded an adverse report. After discussion, it was decided that the applicants (Alessrs Gordon and Taylor) be granted provisional licenses for a period of six months.
