THE MUDDLE IN IRELAND.
Apparently the Lloyd George Government, having made a mess of things in Ireland, has surrendered unconditionally to the gang of murderers and robbers who are engaged in carrying out a policy of terrorism in Ireland. It is announced .that t hcGovernment intends to adopt a conciliatory policy in regard to Ireland. There is no evidence that the Government will not make a muddle of this proposal as they have done with every other one they have attempted to cprry out in Ireland. Mr Lloyd George, two or three years ago, had the opportunity of his lifetime to settle the unrest in Ireland, and he would have received the "whole-hearted support of the Nationalists and the people generally of the whole of Ireland. But Mr Lloyd George failed to' grasp the opportunity. Now, after years of muddling and the sacrifice of scores of lives, Mr Llopd George is going to attempt to inaugurate a policy which he had the opportunity of putting into operation three years ago. After Mr Lloyd George's ignominious “ back-down,” the Sinn Fein element will have less respect than ever for him, and he will find his task of conciliating the disturbing elements a n;tost difficult one. The whole of the British Empire desires that the Irish question be settled, but unless someone more capable than Mr Lloyd George controls matters, we shall yet see terrible bloodshed in Ireland.
