OUR DEFENCE POLICY.
The Government, knowing that the people of this country arc not prepared to support the programme of the disciples of Prussiaftism that .New Zealand should launch out in the direction of a big defence scheme, have done a wise thing in pigeon-holing the proposals of tho militarists. Militarists and their puppet press do not care one iotii whether their proposals are sound commonsense or not so long as the cliqufo of ‘‘tin hats” are kept in easy billets at high salaries. A proper system of naval defence is what is required in connection with New Zealand. If the British naval forces were overcome, our army could not prevent an enemy landing in New Zealand. Even a few- submarines and aeroplanes could do much more in defending .Now Zealand from an enemy than all our land troops. Our protection, lies not in an army, but in a navy. And the Government fully recoguises this, and will no doubt give its attention more fully to this part of our defence policy than to that relating to our land forces As far as our youth is concerned, more encouragement should be given to rifle shooting and more assistance and sympathy meted out*to rifle clubs, which are performing an excellent, work in teaching our young idea to shoot.
