MASTERTON COMPETITIONS.

The musical and elocutionary competitions which the Masterton Competitions Society held iu pre-war days not—only drew some of the best amateur elocutionists and musical*artists, to Master-; ton, but did much iii the direction of developing local talent, many of the Masterton competitors, through the ex-, pcrience gained, winning prizes in other centres. The local competitors have been able to hold their own very well with those from other districts, and there is no reason why the same state of affairs should not be recorded in connection with the present competitions. There is another aspect of the question which presents itself —the upholding of the good name of Masterton in the competitions. There are a. large number of elocutionists, singers, etc., in Masterton who arc capable of holding their own with outside competitors, and we hope to see them numbered among the competitors. In the keen rivalry which would ensue, between Masterton competitors and 'those from other localities, we are sure that. opr. local talent would upliold Masterton’s honour. Those who have charge are doing their utmost to make the' competitions a success, and their efforts should result in their desired object being achieved. As the honour of Masterton is at stake it is up to the local competitors to make entries and thus, assure that a fair proportion of the prizes will be /retained in Masterton.
