BOROUGH LOAN PROPOSALS.
The Mayor of Masterton (Mr W. 11. Jackson) is to explain at a public meeting to-morrow night the borough loan proposals. The Mayor will deal fully with the proposals, but we doubt very much if even his eloquence will succeed in persuading tho ratepayers to vote for the whole of them. We see no reason to alter our opinion, expressed many weeks ago, that the whole of the loan proposals, except the one relating to the gasworks, will bo rejected. A large section of the ratepayers of this town will probably be found to be of opinion that the present is not the time to spend huge sums of money upon works which are not of a remunerative nature. The gasworks, on the other hand, is a paying proposition. Every ratepayer will no doubt recognise that to vote a sum of money to develop a paying concern is good business. Furthermore, it is imperative that the gasworks should be brought right up to date and enlarged in order to cope with the ever-increasing demand for gas. The ratepayers will probably give a negative verdict in regard to the other loan proposals, and they could not very w T ell be blamed for so doing, when all the circumstances are taken into consideration. The gasworks proposal is the only one which the ratepayers need give serious attention to; the other proposals can be rejected without very serious feelings of regret.
