CHAUTAUQUA AND THE OVAL.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,— Might I "have space m your valuable paper to compliment Councillors Henderspn, Ptu-ry and Bur ridge in not supporting; the proposal put to the Borough! Council last evening. I am more than surprised at the figure-heads"" of this town upholding such a proposal. We citizens were pestered enough with their last visit to Masterton, and the condition the Park was left in was a disgrace., NoW that the Park is so picWesque it would be scandalous to allow such a body to uproot our beauty spot. Further, why allow such people ■to enter''our town, grabbing every cent they can lay hands on? Now, if tin's party were just a little patriotic and ■handed over, say, half the proceeds to the Soldiers' Memorial Fund, or some other, such fund, .they would be supported wholeheartedly; but, travelling the country at our expense! —what do we gain? We get enough' education. Could any of our children rehearse what was drilled into thorn by the parties last visit? No! Hoping some other more able pen will take this matter , up ere it bo too late. —I am, *'ti'., ' INTEKESTKD ONE. Masterton, November "9th. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Was the progressive Masterton Borough Council so obsessed with the visiting .Chatauqua or "Upliftors of America," that it granted seven consecutive days upon wlfich the Chatauqua could' charge for admission to a portion of the public park, wholly oblivious of the claims of permanent local clubs, institutions and societies. Tho Council can grant the right to charge for .ten days only in the year; and 1 believe, apart from' the Chatauqu:t.'s seven days, it had already granted the right to charge for four other days. Now, Sir, what about local sports and an opportunity for the cricket Council to arrange representative matches? Has it by its action not directly obstructed sport 1 / Is it not a fact that the Council has broken the law by granting the right to charge on seven consecutive days, including Sunday, whilst it is cleaTly set out that three consecutive days including Sunday shall be grantIs there any legal step available to the cricketers and sportsmen for forcing the Council to conserve local interests? —Yours, etc.,

"SHORT SLIT. ,, Masterton, November 20th.
