TROUBLE IN EGYPT.
According to the cables to-day, the trouble in Egypt is not yet over. One is not at all surprised at this. For years pa:st in lOgypt, as in India, incompetent officials seem to have done their best to antagonise the natives to British rule. These, officials totally ignore native customs and peculiarities, and attempt to force upon them ancient English doctrines. It is a notorious fact that much of the unrest in India is caused by ignorant officials who are bent on a policy of treating the natives —a -.Teat many of whom are more intellectual than the Huglish officials—as if they wore children. We know the state of muddli'dom thai exists in I he islands in Oceania inhabited by natives and governed by English officials. Since the days when the late Lord Kitchener and Lord Cromer completed their work in Hgypt there has been trouble there because the excellent policy carried out by these statesmen was diverted from. It requires for the good administration of Egypt officials who are prepared to appreciate the peculiarities and eccentricities of the Egyptians, and at the same time rule, the country well. For some years past this has been lacking in Egypt—hence the unrest that exists there at the present time.
