CARRIERS AND RAILWAY.

RED-TAPE REGULATIONS RE-

SENTED.

INDIGNANT. CARTERS TAKE ACTION.

A leading Masterton carrier informed a. "Daily Times ,, representative to-day that for some time past the carters doing business, at the Masterton railway etation have not been satisfied with the unnecessary regulations constantly being introduced. The latest regulation brought forward is that carriers themselves have to

"weigh articles taken for consignment, v the railway authorities declining to do pu/i the weighing unless threepeneo is paid for each article or package weighed. This throws a great deal of work upon the carriers, which they allege the railway people should shoulder. The carriers admit that a similar regulation is in force- on city stations, but maintain that under the- "give-and-take ,, prin«k'iples in force in Masterton, the railway officials should continue to weigh the goods. As the railway people insist upon the carrying out of this new regulation to the letter, the carriers this morning decided upon a course of action to get even. It appears that under the departmental regulations the onus is upon the railway goods shed officials to give delivery of goods to carriers at the door of the shed. The carriers to-day demanded that their goods should be plac- . Ed near their carts at the- door, instead .' of the carters assisting the department by helping themselves inside the building. As the railway..-storemen could not cope with the new demand, many carters drove off to inform the business men that the railway could not give them * their goods. ft '' This pin-pricking by the department W w ill cause a great deal oi" ■inconvenience to business people, and annoyance to carriers and the general public," remarked the carrier.' "If a private concern conducted its business in the way the railway does it would go bung in no time. We intend to appeal to the Chamber of Commerce and Progressive League to take the matter up in the interests of the public. ,7
