Mr Jas. Archer, tho treasurer of the Peace Celebrations Committee, -wishes to acknowledge the sura of £100 from Mr W. H. Beetham. Mr P. A. Shaw, of the Bank of New Zealand staff at Kaitaia, aud formerly of Masterton, has been transferred to Samoa. Cable advice has been received that Mr I. L. G .Sutherland, of Mastertou, has been successful in obtaining his B-A. degree, and has also been awarded the senior university scholarship for New Zealand in mental and moral philosophy. Mr George Jackson, a centenarian, has been spending a holiday in Nelson, says the "Colonist." Giving evidence before the Industries Committee at Nelson in regard to by-products from fruit, Mr T. KoulJter declared that an imitation vinegar was oil the market, which was being nold as genuine, in spite of tho Pure Foods Act passed in I9OS. It was impossible for the crc-r.uine browed article to compete with the imitation article. Ho pointed out that in the event of prohibition being carried brewing plants

could be utilised for the manufacture of vnogar. Through the manufacture of imitation vinegar being allowed the Dominion was losing .£.5000 to £0000 a year in duty. If the Pure Foods Act was enforced, he said, about ."100,000 bushels of apples would be used in the manufacture of vhiegar .

On Monday last a very enjoyable social was giveu by the 1.0. R. Tent to those members who have returned from active service, there being about 50 members and visitors present. The Rev. Halliday, in a neat speech, welcomed home those brothers who had done their duty nobly for king and country. Bro. C. A. Hendry and Bro. W. .7. C. Tyacke both suitably responded to the welcome. Apologies were received from Bro. E. Price and Ensign Sawyer. Many enjoyable items of iirst-class order were rendered during the evening by Miss Green, Miss Moore, Miss Jones, Miss Melvin, Miss Miller, Messrs Harrup, Black and Pearse. Competitions were part of the programme, and were entered into with plenty of spirit by all present. During the evening refreshments were handed round by the ladies. An enjoyable evoning was spent.
