DISPUTE OVER MEMORL&L,

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Friday.

A memorial to the late Wi Pere, proproposed by a Native committee, was sanctioned by the Borough Council for erection in a public reserve. After the work had been begun a petition was circulated against the proposal by survivors of tfie Poverty Bay massacre aud others. The council decided to hear both sides in conference to-day. .No decision has been reached, but it is believed that a committee of the council decided to recommend the full council to allow the memorial to be erected on a site original ly fixed on the waterfront.
