THE WESTERN STRUGGLE
There -ia further good news to-day from the western front. Tho French aro hammering away at the enemy in great style and capturing further villages and towns from him. Though we must not expect rapid developments, Wo can rest assured that the French progress will continue for some time. It now appears that a general German retreat on the Soissons-Rheims front is inevitable, and alto'probably on the front running from Montdidicr over to Soissohs. The smashing blows which tho Allies are delivering to'the enemy must be making' themselves felt. The Huns must bo looking anxiously to tho future, because their, reserves are being eaten up. The disaster which has befallen the troops of the Kaiser will reflect itself on the internal affairs of Germany. First there' was the Austrian defeat in. Italy. ; This depressed the--people of Austria, and to a lessor extent thos© of Germany. Now tho calamity on the west front not only agitates the minds of tho Germans at home, but it will cause further unrest in Austria. We found Germany snarling at Austria for the Piave defeat. Now Austria can poiut the linger of scorn at Germany over the western debacle.
