ALLIED UNITY.
AN URGENT NEED
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)
CARLS, Tuesday
M. Painleve, in welcoming the Right Hon. I). Lloyd George at a luncheon, <k'clared that by every railway and by Jill other routes French and English fioldiers. guns and munitions were being hurried across the Alps to assist Italy. '"The help won't fall short of the greatness of the peril," he said. "I need not speak of help when it is a matter of helping brother peoples who have resolved to make every sacrifice for tho common ideal. "There must be one front, one army, one nation. Upon such a programme victory depended . " Mr Lloyd George, in replying to M. Painleve, referred to the new War Couii'il. "They, unfortunately, had not time to consult America and Russia before forming the Council." said Mr Lloyd George. "The Italian disaster necessitated prompt action on the part of those Powers whose forces were re.u--ilily available to assist Italy. It was imperative that all tho Allies should be represented, in order to ensure the success of the great enterprise in Italy, •which was essential to victory. "They had commenced to obtain tho liusso-American consent and co-opera-tion .
"Lot us be just," he said, "to Russia, which was suffering from a violent fever as tho result of "atrocious misgovernment. Sho was now winning her way to steadier and cleaner health than ever she enjoyed. We should not forget what sho did in the early days of tho Avar, when her heroic sacrifice helped to save France and Italy. "What, then, was the reason the Allies to-day were not much further along the road to victory , ? The fault had been entirely duo to the absence of real unity in tho Allied direction of the war." We all felt the need of it, but had never yet achieved it, each country being left to its own devices. ''
