THE ITALIAN POSITION.
PIGHTING DRAWS NEAR VENICE
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON .Moudav.
"Mr Ward Price, reports that the lighting ou the Piave river is likely to be chietlv an artillery duel, the Germans hoping by superior weight of metal to keep the'ltalian guns down siifiiciently to permit of them to throw pontoons across and give a passage to the infautrv without heavy loss. 'Fighting draws near to Venice, from which all civilians have heeii encouraged to leave by fieo trains. The Government is doing everything in. tho hope of safe-guarding the national, or rather the world's, possessions from the blind destructive- fury of the war. A single hour's bombardment of "Venice would destroy irreplaceable treasures of ages. Therefore elaborate precautions have been taken to remove everything that will give the slightest pretext for treating Venice- as a fortrens. Xobody wearing a uniform is permitted to enter the city.
