HEAVY RAINS REPORTED.
GISBORNE RIVERS IN FLOOD
TWO MEN DROWNED
[By Telegraph—Press t Association.]
GIS.BORNE, Monday
Heavy rain has been falling for the past few days, and all the district rivers are running high, though there is at present no danger of floods.
A man named Jleenan, whose Christian name is unknown, was drowned this afternoon in a Hooded creek near Patutahi. He had been camped with a party on the banks of the stream, and in some manner fell into the torrent. A mate went in after him, but his efforts at rescue were unsuccessful, and he regained the bank in an exhausted condition himself.
A man named .Jenkins is believed to have been drowned in a river six miles from Tiniroto. .Jenkins is supposed to have come from Frasertown, and was on his way to Ruakituri, where he was to obtain employment. He evidently did not know the district, and instead of using a suspension bridge attempted to negotiate a ford which in the swollen state of the river was quite impassable. A settler lower down the river found Jenkins' hack and pack horse in the stream, but so far there is no trace of the rider.
