MR FISHER AT PONGAROA.

POXGAROA, Sunday

The Hon. 1\ M. B. Fisher arrived lit l/ongaroa, via. Eketahuna, on Saturday night, accompanied by Mr K. W. Holmes, Chief Government .Marine Enirineer, niul Messrs Sykes and Esoott, M'sl.\ Tlie Minister was deputationis<.,l and. banqueted, and met with a hearty reception from a large gathering. *Mr Fisher stated that a. number of fanatics, "who were determined that he sliould not be heard, had written to him anonymously since his "Wellington meeting, intimating that.neither lie nor the Hon. Mr Ilerdman would be given a hearing till the elections were over. Mr Fisher expressed the opinion that if these tactics were pursued, representative settlers would warmly defend the Ministry's action over the late strike. Alluding to his meeting in "Wellington, he said he was practically howled down by about IHO degenerates, who controlled the meeting. The incident would, lie said, have an opposite effect to that intended by the Red Feds, and would strengthen the position of the Government. The Minister proceeded to-day to Akitio. lie returns to-morrow, and will deliver a political address hero in the evening. With Mr Holmes, Mr Fisher is inspecting the Aohanga and Akitio rivers relative to harbour schemes.
