TAUERU.

j Wednesday. i The most successful function oi the your was held in the Taueru Hall last i'riuay evening, when the Taueru aud Lraucepeth lootbulieis combined and gave a plaiu and iancy dress ball. The • weather comlitions were very favour- : abie, and tnere were over iitty couples :in attendance, including a good number ■oi visitors irom Masterton. Messrs ■ j±. AixUuinness, E. Loader and W. I Loader were AL'sC, and are to be con- ' gratulated upon the very able manner iv which they performed their duties, ana a word must also be said for tho worKing committee for the maimer in • wnich the general arrangements were ationded to. Dancing was continued 'until a.m., when " Auld Lang ; oyne" was sung, and cheers giveu for : tne tootbaiicrs. A feature of the evening was an eulogistic speech made by my Dudley on behalf of the Brance--1 petk footballers in honour oi their popular captain {Mr 11. McUuhuiess), who is retiring from the team owing to the fact that he is leaving the district. "Mac" was given three hearty cheers by his team at the cbnciusiou o- the speech, to which he suitably replied. The music, which was supplied by Messrs Myers, Larseu aud Hutchinson, was all that could be desired. Following is a list of the fancy dresses: —Ai.esuames W. Percy, Japanese Costume; Hortou, Indian maid; Misses V. Duil'ey, | Stars aud Stripes; L. Loader, Billiards; j L. Hill, Patches; R. Hudson, Gypsy fortune-teller; M. Scott, Waitress; F. Birling, Spring; R. Birliug, Cherry Tipe; N. Uirling, Flags: At. liiaki, Quaker Girl; I. McKenzie, Forget Ale Nots; Devereaux, Sailor Girl; Messrs T. Pic- ' ket, Kilts; C. Hill, Fireman; Te Tau, Mexican Cowboy; Hudson, Cook; Hor- t ton, Druid; and there were two native ; ladies and gentlemen attired in some j very fine samples of Maori mats. Lambing is nearly finished in the district, and docking operations have already begun. Lambs are very plentiful, and are doing well. Big per ceutages will probably be realised when docking returns are known. The road from Masterton to Taueru is in very good order for motoring at present, and it is also fairly good from Taueru to Langdale, though a trifle "rutty" in places. The Taueru bridge is being repaired; some of the piles are being replaced.
