OUR NEW POSTMASTER.

The popularity of Mr S. dimming, who has left Rotorua after a term of 14 months as postmaster there, having been promoted to the postmastership at Masterton, was evidenced on Wednesday morning, when a large number ot business men met him at the Grand Hotel in order to bill him au revoir. The gathering was representative of tho professional, commercial, and retail branches of business, and as such can be accepted as indicative of the extent of the yood wishes that will accompany Mr Gumming, says tho .Rotorua. Times. Mr 11. M. Martin presided, and briefly touched on the many good qualities of the departing oflicial. Several other speakers followed, the burden of their remarks being identical. Mr dimming, they said, had won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. As an official, he was obliging and courteous, ever ready to assist the public, whilst as a private* citizen he had gained many friends. He had always endeavoured to improve the status of the town so far as postal work was concerned, and many improvements were initiated by him. One and all sincerely regretted the severance of pleasant relations, but all rejoiced that the move meant promotion. That Mr and Mrs dimming might enjoy long life, prosperity and happiness was the common sentiment. The health of Mr and Mrs dimming was then honoured enthusiastically. In his reply Mr dimming said as a public servant he had always endeavoured so far as in him lay, to conserve the public interests and advance the town. He was gratified to know that his efforts had been appreciated. He thanked them for coupling with the toast the name of Mrs Cumin ing, who had in a sense been sacrificed to his desire to do justice to the public.
