THE NEW VICAR-GENERAL.
We tender our hearty congratulations to one of Masterton's prominent citizens and most earnest workers, on his elevation another step in the walk of life which he has elected to follow. Masterton has been honoured by the appointment of the pastor of St. Patrick's parish, the Very Rev. Dean McKenna, as Vicar-General, in succession to the Very Rev. Dean O'Shea, now Coadjutor Archbishop. For over twenty-five years the Dean has laboured in the Masterton district, and he is known to all —both members of his congregations and those who are not of his Hock—as a leader of men, a strong man, and a progressive citizen, and there is no doubt he will be a worthy successor to his predecessor in ottiec. The Dean has always identified himself with the progress and advancement of the district. Among his important work in the interests of the church were the erection of the convent and the enlargement of the church and school, and his services in regard to education will long bo remembered. When Dean McKenna arrived in Masterton the parish was not in a prosperous condition, and was burdened with a heavy debt, but his able administration has brought it to its present sound financial position. In addition to the advancement of the church in Masterton, the Dean has had churches erected in other parts of the parish, and has done much for parishioners in outlying districts. The people of Masterton will regret his departure, but will join with us in extending to him congratulations on his well-merited appointment to a higher position in the service of: his church.
