The death occurred at 11 o'clock last evening of Mr Thomas George Macarthy, one of tho best known of Wellington 's residents. Mr Macarthy hail not been in his usual hen Ith since last ■winter, when he had an attack of pneumonia.. Born in London in IS.'!.'!, Mr Macarthy was attracted to the colonies by the gold discoveries of the fifties, and after a period spent in Victoria, crossed the Tasman Sea, arriving in Otago in 1563 to take part in the stirring events which happened iti the early days of the southern goldlields. When the West Coast rush took place Mr Macnrthy deserted Otago for the new field of operations. He eventually settled at Charleston, where he established a brewery, which he conducted with sue-t-ess for several years. During his residence on the West Coast he took considerable interost in the Reefton mines, and was very fortunate in his investments. He moved to Wellington in 1877, and purchased a large brewery business, which he enlarged and extenMacarthy always took a keen iDjßest in "the development of the industries of the Dominion, and occupied the position of director of many public companies. He had been director of the Bank of New "Zealand and chairman of directors of the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company. Mr Macarthy was a very extensive landowner. He leaves a widow, but no family. It appears that the father of Lord Liverpool, the New Governor of New Zealand, served With distinction in the Royal Navy during the Waikato war. The Dunedin Star obtained the following particulars from Captain Easther, who commanded one of the steamers th.-.t peppered The Maoris from the Wai kato river:—"Lord Liverpool's father was a Mr Cecil George Savile Foljambe, a midshipman in the Curacoa, the flagship of Commodore Sir William Wiseman; Bart. During the Waikato war, of 1863-64, he served with the Waikato flotilla in the steamer Avon, which I commanded. At Rangiriri he was with the party that landed and helped to storm the redoubt, and was mentioned in despatches. Captain Easther thoughtfully added to his reply of the despatches referred to ■yjHkrein;we read that Mr Foh/imbe was owF of the /storming party under ComHiander Mayne, of the Eclipse. Commander Mayne was severely wounded in the left- hip during the encounter. Rangiriri was a stubborn fight, as some may remember. The Maori redoubt was nred on by Captain Mercer's Armstrong battery and the guns of the flotilla, and the naval contingent then tried to carry the place by escalade, but they were twice repulsed with heavy losses When General Cameron was about to renew the ._ assault at daybreak the enemy surrendered, and IS3 prisoners were captured. Many gentlemen in England and elsewhere have been proud of fighting with General Cameron at that spirited engagement. Captain Mercer was killed at Rangiriri."
