Mrs T. G. Gilbert, of Karori, Wellington, is at present in Masterton, visiting her father, Mr R. Crawford. Mr and Mrs O. Heffernan, of Taratahi, left Carterton for Wellington on Wednesday, to embark on the Orontes_iLf ou a trip to Europe. 1 Major-General Godley, Command-" ant of the Defence Forces, is due bacic in Wellington from Auckland next Tuesday. Mr H. D. Bedford, of Dunedin, has announced his intention of throwing in his lot witli the unity campaigners of the New Zealand Labour Party. Tho cousecration of Canon Sadlier to the Bishopric of Nelson will take place, says the N.Z. Times, on July 2lst, instead of on St. James's Day, July 25th, as origiualJy intended. Colonel James Allen, Coast Defeuee Commander for the Otago Military District, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces officers' deooration, his commissioned service covering a period of twenty-oue years. The funeral of tlie late Mr W. Keeble took place yesterday afternoon, tho Rev. Mr Williams, vicar..of St. Matthew's Church, conducting the service. Members of the Foresters' Lodge, of which deceased was a member, followed the remains, and Btol H. H. Wimsett, C.R., read the ForGJJp ters burial service. Bros. Petersen]i Timms, Fowlds anil Z. M. Hoar acted as pall-bearers. Some beautiful floral tributes were laid ou the grave. The dismissal of Lieutenant (temporary captain) A. H. Rassam, an officer of the New Zealand Staff Corps, who held the position of adjutant of tlie Wellington battalion, Is gazetted, for absence from the Dominion without leave. Messrs J. Strauchon (Under-Secre-tary of Lands), W. B. Montgomery (Secretary of Customs), and G. Ailport (Secretary of Marine) have been appointed members of tlie Public Service Classification Board in succession to Messrs W. C Kensington and F. G. Waldegrave (retired), and the late Mr Hugh Pollen. I Major-General Harry Finn, C. 8.. | and Mr Harold Finn were passengers by the Ruahine which arrived in Wellington from London yesterday. Major-Geueral, Finn was InspectorGeneral of the Commonwealth Forces from 1905 to 1907, when he retired and returned to England. He is on a ronnu-.he-world tour. Another passenger by the same vessel was Major Percy Smith. A Feiiding telegram states that, a large and representative gathering at Halcombe last night presented 4} illuminated address to Mr O. W. Pleasants on the occasion of his leaving the district. He had been conuected with every -public body in the district. His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington) was ihe guest of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club yesterday. Ho spends to-day shooting over Mr Taranaki Te Na's property, to-morrow at the Waiohiki golf links and on Sunday motors to the Ninth (Wellington) East Mounted Rifles camp at Tutira.—Hastings telegram. Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, accompanied by his private secretary, Mr Grocott, and Hon. Te Rangihiroa, Native Minister, with his secretary, Mr Harvey, were taken for a drive round Masterton this morning and visited the Hospital. The party will leave for Wellington by the afternoon train.
