MR HENDERSON'S VIEWS.

QUESTION OP A MAIL SERVICE

When spoken to on the. subject, Mr A. Henderson, president of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, said that he thought a service through the districts mentioned would be a useful one for the settlers concerned, would assist settlement aiong the route and be of advantage to Masterton from a trading poiut of view. in view of the heavy expenditure connected witli a coach service he favoured the substitution of a taxicab to run daily through to Pongaroa. At the present time mails are not delivered in the Wangaehu Valley, settlers obtaining their correspondonce, etc., at Masterton, while the Alfredton mail is brought iv from Eketahuna and the Jfongaroa mail goes via Pahiatua. If the Government would subsidise a daily mail service right through from Masterton to Pongta|a it would prove a great convenience to settlers and a quick way of dealing with correspondence. A taxicab carrying passengers and mails could leave Masterton at eight o'clock iv the morning, arriving at Pongaroa about noon, and return to Masterton the same day. Mr Henderson stated that he intended to go fully into the matter and would probably bring it before the next meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce.
