ENTERTAINMENTS.

THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURES,

The change of programme at the Foresters' Hall last evening drew a packed house. The pictures were excellent aud of such variety as to suit all tastes: the critical audieuce in attendance being most demonstrative in their applause. The inauguration of au orchestra to supply the incidental music was much appreciated, eulogistic reference being made by those present to Messrs Thompson and Payne's enterprise in this connection. Dramatic studies were a feature of the programme, the "star" picture being "Lieutenant Rose and the Chinese Pirates," the latest of a very popular series of films. This drama is a particularly exciting one, well worked up, aud a triumph of cinematography. The photography was excellent, particularly that in regard to the sections showing the searchlight iv use. The audience were worked up to a high pitch of excitement, as the various scenes were thrown upon the screen, and applauded vigorously. Another capital picture was "The Cowboy's Devotion." It depicted the return home of a college girl aud her beau, tho cowardice of the latter when they are attacked by Indians whilst journeying to the ranch, aud the bravery of a cowboy in defending the girl against the Indians. Mauy exciting scenes are pourtrayed aud the drama ends much to the satisfaction of the audience in general aud the cowboy in particular. Other excellent dramas warn : "Double Dealing," ''Her Father's Pride," "The Special Agent," "The Sergeant," and "The Secret Room." "The Resin Industry" was an interesting picture. A grand series of comics was shown, the most popular being "Fooishead iv a bank" and "The Man to beat Jack Johnson." The programme will be repeated this evening.
