Mr George Witty, M.P. for Riccartou, underwent au operation for appendicitis at Christchurch yesterday. He is in a private nursing home, aud is- progressing very satisfactorily.
Major McKenzie, editor of the War Cry in Australia, who went to Melbourne from the New Zealand War Cry last year, has been appointed provincial commauder of the Salvation Army work iv Tasmania.
Madame Emma Calve, the worldfamed soprauo, will be supported during ncr forthcoming concert tour of Australasia by M. Jacques Pintel, a Russian pianist, and Siguor Galileo Gasparri. au Italian operatic tenor. Miss Helen Lowell, whose "Miss Hazy" (the woe-begone bride) in "Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" will not soon be forgotteu by Masterton playgoers, is said to have made the hit of her career in "The Lottery Man," in New York recently.

A. St. Audrew's Church, T'iuui, yesterday, a pretty wedding took place, Mrs J. Andrew, eldest daughter of Mrs Morrisou, of Blairlogie, beiug married to Dr Bird, of Nelson. The bride looked handsome in a travelling costume comprising a blue sac coat aud skirt, tailor made, with hat to match, trimmed with shadow wings. Tho Rev. J. Sykes, of Upper Hutt, was the officiating clergyman, assisted by the Rev. J. F. Phillips, of Tinui. The settlers iv the district had prepared a pleasaut surprise for the contracting parties by beautifully decorating the church. Tho uewiy-wedded couple left on a honeymoon tour by motor car.
Mr J. C. Scott, roid inspector, Masterton, has been transferred to Mangaroa, near Te Kuiti, in the King Couutry, where ho is to have charge of a largo district comprising some very rough country. Mr Scott has boon statiouo.d in Mastertou for eleven years and during that period has constructed some 1)0 miles of dray road, irrespective of metalling aud bridge construction. His mauy friends, while regretting Jus departure, will wish him every success iv bis new sphere. Tiie Masterton district has beeu divided into two, half of which will bo taken by the Pahiatua iuspector and the other half by the inspector at Cartertou.
