SOUTHERN STOCK SALES
(By Telegravh—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Weduesday. At Addiugtou yards there were fairly large eutries of stock and a good .attendance. Store sheep and fat lambs showed au advance. Far sheep sold at about last week's rates. Fat cattle were dull of sale, aud fat pigs sold well, but stores were rather easier. Store cattle were slow of sale, and dairy cows were in good demand. was a larger yarding of store shee|r than last week, all classes being well represented, though there were not so many lambs as of late. Several lines of sheep showed that they had come from a distance. There were a few lines of good ewes, but the bulk were of medium quality, and in backward condition. Most of the lots were of moderate quality. The late rains having improved the feed prospects, there was au active demand for all classes, aud all lots sold at au advance of ls on late rates. The demaud for ewes, though early in the season, was keen, aud all lots sold readily. Rape lambs sold at 10s ■Od to lis 3d; forward wethers, to 13s; medium, Us Od to 12s Od ; small, 10s to Us 3d; good two-tooth ewes, 14s to 14s ~d ; medium, to 13s 9d : two aud foar-t-ooth, 14s to 15s 7d; six and eight-tooth, 12s lOd to 13s 2d. There was an entry of 3312 fat lambs, winch were of better average quality thau last week, as "improved feed prospects have enabled farmers to holdJftack unfinished lambs. Tiiere was _ecu demaud and prices were firmer by fully 9d to ls per head. There were 2700 export and the balance by butchers. The range of prices was 13s 9d to 14s 8d for heavy weights and tegs, and Us 2d to 13s Od for light to average weights. There was a moderate yarding of fat sheep, of which a large portion was ewes. , The demand for wethers was steady at last week's rates. Ewes in the early part of the sales sold well, but eased oil' afterwards. The range of prices w T as:—Prime wethers, 15s to 17s 7d; others, 1.2s Od to 14s 6d ; prime ewes, Us Od to 14s 9d; extra, los; others, Ss Od to Us. The yarding of fat cattle totalled 201 head of average quality. There was dull demand and values were easier, especially for steers, which made £5 os to £9 10s; heifers, £5 to £7 10s; aud cows, £5 to £3 7s 0d (equal to 20s to 21s for prime, 18s Od to 19_i_l for medium, and 17s to 18s lor cow and inferior beef). Veal calves sold at 4s Gd to 52s The entry of store cattle was a small one, aud consisted principally of cows. For all sorts the demand was weak," - and in some instances sales were difficult to effect. Yearlings made 27s to 37s Od ; ID to 18-month sorts, £2; 2year heifers, £3; heifers, £3 9s to £3 Us; 3-year steers, £5 17s Od; 2-_-J ear steers, £4 18s Od; 3-year heifers, £3 lis; and dry cows, 20s to £3 15s. A medium entry of dairy cows met with spirited competition, aud a good clearance was made at prices ranging from £3 10s to £10 ss. There was a medium entry of pigs, and fats were in good] demand, but for stores there was a weaker market. Heavy baconers made 43s to 50s; 35s Od to 41s (equal to 3%d per lb); large porkers, 32s to 355; and smaller, 27s to 30s (equal to 4!£d to 4%d per lb). Medium stores made 20s to 33s Od; smaller, 15s to 19s; aud . eau«_R 9s to 12s Gd. In view of Lord Kitchener's review of the troops on Wednesday, February 23rd, the sale at Addiugton yards that week will be held on Tuesday, February 22nd. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. At Burnside stock market 182 fat cattle were yarded. Prices were a shade firmer than last week. Best bullocks, £85s to £9 10s; medium, £7 10s to £8; inferior, £0 Os to £0 17s 6d. Fat sheep: 2738 penned. For prime •wethers and ewes the market was ls easier, and lighter sort 3 were about 2s easier. Best wethers, to 10s 6d; medium, 12s to 13s Od; best ewes, to 14s Gd; medium, 8s Gd to 10s. Fat lambs: 1124 penned. Freezing buyers were operating, and [this resulted iivfirrn sale. Best, to 14s 9d; f reezinpPlambs, 9s Gd to 12s Gd; smaller 7s 6d to 8s Gd. Pigs: Small pigs were in fairly large supply, and bidding was fairly brisk. Suckers, 8s to Us; slips, 12s to i6s; stores, 18s to 235; porkers, 2Gs to 335; light baconers, 35s to 40s; heavy baconers, 43s to 465.
