POLLARD'S OPERA COMPANY.
As "The Belle of Cuba," with ■which this popular combination will Teuew acquaintance with their hosts of admirers to-morrow night, is entirely new here, the following from a Duuetemporary may prove iustrucinteresting:—"The Belle of Cuba," with which the company opened in His Majesty's Theatre ou Saturday night, while not strictly •speakiug comic opera as it is usually -understood, cauuoi; certainly be designated as frivolous, aud contains much that is admirable aud pretty. Tiie story is a mere nothing, but iv that noMiiug the composer and librettist have managed to bang some very pretty aud appropriate music, aud •some smart aud diverting dialogue. It cau hardly fail to occur to auyore •who is at all observant that every ■opening has been seized upon with avidity for the introduction of love 'ballad or humorous jingle, aud has been turnod to good accouut in very nearly all cases. Generally speaking, the music is good—better thau is frequently met with in operatic extravagauza, and iv some instances distinctly clever. Humour is the keynote of the whole performance, and if it has its extravagancies it certainly keeps the house brimful of merriment. Thifc. costumes are as rich, fanciful as the heart could desire, and, quite admitting that the vouug ladies form the chief •ornament while they are before the footlights, the sceuery adds no inconsiderable charm to the dazzling pictures which, throwu into prominence ary the aid of the limelight, are presented to*the spectators."
