MAN CUTS HIS THROAT
AFTER SERIOUSLY ILL-TREAT-ING A YOUNG WOMAN.
A mau named William Anderson committed suicide m Wellington shortly before midnight last night, after a brutal attack on a girl with whom he had been keeping company for some time past. The affair happened at the rear of a house in Cambridge-terrace, the resideuce of the girl's father, Mr William Anton.
It appears that Miss Antou went to tho Opera House with a friend, and while she was away Anderson called at her father's house to see her. There had evidently been some trouble between them previously, but on being told where Miss Anton was, Anderson decided to wait until her return home in order to see her. This he did, aud when the girl appeared he met her just outside the back entrance to the house. Some high words passed between the two, and then the mau, anparently losing all control of himself, struck the girl repeatedly with his bare fists, knocking her to tiie ground and inflicting serious injuries to her head and face.
Auderson afterwards moved away iuto the darkness, while the girl fouud her way iuside the house. Police aid was summoned, and, ou Mr Autou and the constable returning, the body of Anderson was found in the backyard. The mau was quite dead when discovered, his throat beiug cut from ear to ear.
Anderson was about thirty-four years of age, aud was a native of Naseby, Central Otago.
