A select, but by no meaus numerous, assemblage of citizens iv Wellingtou has affirmed the expediency of universal military training, and of employers of labour giving workers holidays for this purpose without any deduction of thoir wages. All this is well meauing, but is exceedingly foolish. Three young men out of four are probably not worth training, for reliable soldiers canuot be made out
of auy material. As regards employers giving paid time away, the tniug is
ludicrous. The State, with its labour legislation already robs the employer —sometimes to the exteut of taking his shirt off his back. Tho military authorities, if they take what the State leaves, will get precious little. Is it uot time to give up talking uousense about raiding employers? No doubt the employers would be geuerous if they were free to ruauage their own businesses—but the State has so managed things for them that there is absolutely no margin left for generosity.
