LANSDOWNE NOTES.
(Special to Daily Times.)
It is gratifying to notice that a commencement is about to be made of widening the northern approach, the measurements having evidently been taken and marked off. Street culverts have been cleaned out, and the footpaths along the Opaki-road have received a niuch'needed coating of metal.
A shocking case of cruelty to a beast has been reported, aud it is evidently a matter for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to deal with. It appears that ou Tuesday, (sth April, at midday, a drover, with a mob of cattle, was passing between Bramerton and Townseud's, when one of the animals fell over, or was knocked down the bank, and sustained some injury on accouuc of which it was unable to move. Ou the following Saturday the poor auimal was still there, without food or water. After it had lain in suffering for four days, a roadman mercifully put au end to its miseries by shooting it.
Ou Tuesday last two ladies, driving home in buggies after dark, on the Taueru-road, with lights, just escaped a serious accident, when meeting two waggons, without lights, on a narrow part of the road. The ladies who were driving the buggies received a severe fright when they came upon the waggons, looming up almost directly in front of them in a very narrow place.
