" Indications of GOOD GOAL" was, briefly, the report of Mr Graham, a mining Engineer of British Columbia, who visited Mauriceville yesterday. The proprietor of the Wairarapa Daily Times thought that an outside opinion on the Mauriceville Coal prospects by a competent and disinterested expert, would be of value at the present time. Mr Graham, who was paying a private visit to this town, kindly consented to go to Mauriceville as a personal favour to the editor of this journal. Mr Graham in past years has had experience in our New Zealand coalfields, and tells us that the general conditions at Mauriceville resemble those of the Bannockburn Coalfield in Otago. Volcanic action has up-endod numerous leads from the main seam, aud some of those leads are worth working, but, in his opinion, there is a reasonable prospect of striking the main seam itself aud this work should be put in hand. By a curious coincidence Mr John Hayes, an Inspector of the Government Mining Department, is spending a few days in Mauriceville making a thorough examination of the coal area. Mr Hayes is there for business purposes aud declines to be interviewed. Mr Martin Kennedy was also at Mauriceville yesterday. He owns a considerable property there aud he isalso said to know something about coal mining. If so, we might almost expect him to take some interest in the development of a coalfield there.
