MR JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN.
A SLOW RECOVERY
Lloyd's "Weekly of October (ith says: Mr Chamberlain is slowly reocvering his strength, as the result of the careful treatment he has been undergoing. He still suffers severely from the gout in one leg and slightly in the other, and in one arm, but bis eyes are now quite free from this insidious complaint. His brain is quite clear, and every morning he devotes two hours to reading newspapers aud keeping in touch with public affairs. During his seclusion at-Highbury, the only jmvsous Mr Chamberlain lias beyond" the members of his his private secretary, Mr Wilson, Have been four friends who live in the neighbourhood. He walks daily for a considerable time in his grounds, taking great interest in the-gardeuing operations. Dressed usually in a grey suit aud a soft grey felt hat, he walks at a brisk pace, requiring no assistance, though be leans somewhat heavily on a thick stick. His mouocle has been replaced by spectacles. Mr Chamberlain rarely breakfasts before ten, while by the same hour in the evening he is usually in bed. His diet is carefully regulated, being spariug in quantity, while meat is reduced to a minimum. His allowance of the strong green cigars, of which lie used to consume so large a number, has been cut down to two or three a day, and he seldom smokes a pipe. In the afternoon he usually rests for several hours. His constant attendants are Mrs Chamberlain, to whose tender and unremitting care so much of his recovery is due, and Mr Wilson, who for so many years has been his private secretary.
