LANSDOWNE NOTES.
[Special to Daily Times.)
The past two days, rain has threatened, but none has come. Residents are getting short of water already, and this is very early in the summer. A proper water supply is badly needed, and it could be so easily accomplish
Ed, with a direct fall from the Ruamahauga river. In the case of Jj&c there is only the Lansdowne dam back upon, and thai is about half a mile from the thicKest part of the suburb. Tbe houses here are being substantially built, and very close together, and there is no protection whatever against fire. The different owners of what is known as Adams' Bush are acting wisely in preserving this piece of scenic beauty, as in time to come the Native bush' will be very valuable, being so near the town of Masterton. With all the new growth and various shades of green the Native bush is now perfection. A curiosity is now to be seen at Lansdowne "in a pair of young cygnets with a hen mother, who seems very proud of her' very large chicks. The largest and oldest elm tree in the Wairarapa is growing at the residence of Mr H. Williams. This tree was planted by the late Major Valentine Smith (who then owned the property) over fifty years ago, and is on the lawn in front of the house. The tree is seen to perfection, with the new growth of leaves, and the large branches spreading over a greater Ntflghrt of the lawn, affording shade in flfte summer. It is a most beautiful sight to behold. Along the footpath between the bridges the grass is very long, *aud when a heavy dew has fallen, is very unpleasant to lady pedestrians, who have to step aside into the grass to allow others to go by. Last year the footpath was kept in better order than it is now. The grass was mown early in the spring.
