The Kaiparoro settlers presented a petition to the County Council, on Saturday, addressed to the Minister ot Public Works, asking the Government to construct a bridge over the Makakahi river, at Mount Bruce.—l he Couucil supported the petition A request was made to the bounty •Council to allow a bicycle road race on the-County roads.—The Council did not grant the request. The bank of the river at the Manga - taiuoka Bridge is being washed away: the County Council are asking the Government to protect the bridge. The County Conncil received a reply from the Railway Department in response to a request by the Couucil that the Department put iv a subway at the dangerous crossing at Newman, that they could not do the work on the score of expense.—The Council are replying that the expense is nothing compared with the constant risk of life. The funeral of the late Mrs D. L. Toohill, a well-known resident of Eketahuna, who died at Napier, on Thursday, took place on Sunday afternoon. The respect felt for the deceased lady was evidenced by the number of people attending. The cortege was the largest ever seen in Eketahuua. * A boy, named Mead, who was riding a horse, on Sunday afternoon, rode over Mrs Suckliug, who was wheeling a baby in a go-cart. Mrs Suckling was 'severely shaken and cut about, and the go-cart broken, but the baby escaped unhurt.
