A Terrible Experience
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
Waihi, Yesterday
A shocking accident occurred in the Waihi Mine. Two miners named Gray andßoxall, j who were engaged in sinking No. 2 shaft below No. 8 level, 850 feet down, were caught like rats in a trap at the bottom of the shaft, owing to a winch driven by an air-com-pressor failing to work at a critical moment The men had charged three holes in the I bottom of the shaft, lighted the fuses, and then signalled the man in charge of the winch to haul them up. The bucket was drawn up a few feet, and then dropped back. The men tumbled out. At the same time their lights went out. The men endeavoured to locate the ladder at the side of the shaft; but in the darkness, intensified by the smoke | from the burning fuse, failed to find it. Meanwhile the shots exploded, one after the other. The wonder was that the men were not killed outright. As it was, they were terribly, injured, Gray succumbing a few hours later, while his comrade, Boxall, is in a precarious condition.
