APPOINTMENT OF SANITARY INSPECTOR.

Matter Discussed by Borough Council.

Proposed Schedule of Official

Duties,

The question of the appointment of a sanitary inspector for the Masterton Borough was again discussed at the meeting of the ! Borough Council, held last evening. Tho Town Clerk reported that Inspector Schauer, representing the Health Department, had waited on him in reforonce to the co-opera-tion of the Council with tho Department in the appointment of a suitable and permanent inspector, and stated that the terms of tho Department's offer had been drafted by tho Chief Inspector, and should have reached tho Town Clerk yestorday. Tho letter had not been received, but Mr Brown explained that the Department was prepared to send two men to this district, one of the officers to be appointed the Council's inspector, and as ho would not be able to carry out all the duties which the Council had resolved upon imposing on an inspector whom they selected, tho Department would be agreeable to allow a sufficient sum to remunerate a man appointed to perform the extra duties. If, however, tho Couucil persisted in the determination to engage a man expressly for Borough work the Department was not prepared to contribute anything towards his salary beyond £10 or £15 a year for his services in reporting to the Department cases of infectious diseases.

The schedule of duties drawn up by the Council for the inspector to carry out includes inspection and testing of drains, sewers and sanitary plumbing work ; inspection of buildings for dangerous goods, stores and billiard-room licenses ; inspection of vehicles, horses and harness for licensing under the by-laws ; systematic and periodical inspection of all premises in the Borough, and keeping a diary of such inspection, showing the sanitary slate of such premises and notices given and action taken to abate nuisances ; to see to the proper observance and carrying out. of the by-laws and regulations for the good rule and government of the Borough, and prosecute for breaches, offences and nuisances : disinfection ol dwellings, rooms or buildings in infectious disease cases ; generally to act as inspector of nuisances under the Municipal Corporations aud Public Health Acts and the by-laws of the Borough. The officer is required to be a practical plumber and qualified to test sanitary plumbing work and drains.

Councillors further declared themselves in favour of appointing an officer exclusively for Borough work, but it was decided to defer such appointment till the letter from the Department has been received.
