__ * The Balance Co-operative Dairy Company, yesterday, distributed £3000 among its suppliers for milk supplied during April. Tho supply for the month has been wellmaintained, despite the unfavourable weather. Another case of plague is reported at Perth. Sir John Forest, Federal Treasurer, has returned from London. Ho found that London financiers regarded the credit of the Commonwealth States very favourably. An election for the Federal Legislative Council resulted in the defeat of the Labour candidates. Tho Chairman of the London Bank of Australia, presiding at a meeting of shareholders, stated that with a few more such seasons as recently experienced, he believed the prospect for Australian institutions and Banks would be better than any seen during the last twelve or thirteen years. The New South Wales Presbyterian Assembly passed a resolution expressing gratification at the receipt of a bequest of £4500, under the will of the late Mr Donald Manson, of Palmerston North, New Zealand. Five earthquake shocks have been experienced at Guernsey. The actuarial deficiency in the Great Northern Railway superannuation fund is half a million. The Selection Committee has appointed Lieut.-Colonel 11. J. Foster, of the Royal Engineers, late military attache at Washington, to the position of Director of Military Science in the Sydney University. It_ is considered an excellent appointment, owing to Colonel Foster's exceptional literary, scientific and strategic qualifications. The War Office hesitates to part with so valuable an officer.
