CARTERTON NOTES

(Special to Daily Times.)

The front of the building of the grace* y and drapery departments of the local branch of the W.F.C.A. is at present undergoing alterations.

Mr D T. King's staff of workmen have removed Mr A. Bayliss' house, in Highstreet, back a distance of thirty feet from the footpath, and have placed the building upon the piles. The other work necessary to the structure is being carried out.

The new High School building here is finished oil outside in stone colour, the window frames in green.

The local Methodist Band of Hope intend gidfc an entertainment at Clareville one e'mnug during the present week.

Carterton footballers, and enthusiasts of the game of Rugby, are jubilant over the win of Carterton, against Masterton, on Saturday. Some have gone so far as to prophecy that the local team will run in that position throughout the season. However, that remains to be seen ; but if they go in for more training, the team will be a hard one to defeat.

The number of factories registered in this district number forty-eight.

I understand that an effort is being made to arrange a football match, Veterans v. Present Players, to be played in about a fortnight's time. A collection will be taken up at the gate, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the Town Clock Fund.

The recent severe gale uprooted a couple of full-grown cabbage trees, belonging to Mr M. Jones, of High-street. The owner presented the trees to the Borough Council, to be planted in Carrington Park. The trees have been planted in the Park, and it is teed that they will take root, which, is doubtful, as they are pretty old.
