RELIC OF OLDEN TIMES.
An Interesting Ceremony
A very interesting ceremony took place at Russell," Auckland, recently, when one of the guns belonging to 11.M.5. Hazard, which was used against tho Maoris in defence of Kororareka during Hoke's war, was mounted on a carriage and placed in front of the public hall. A great feast had been prepared by the Natives, the food being cooked in the old Maori stylo and served out in small flax platters, as was usual in the old days. Tho Natives sang songs of welcome, and danced a war dance. Everything on the Native side was carried out according lo old Native custom. Mr Horace Williams, county chairman, Mr R. Stone, Mr Florance, S.M.,'Judge Jones, of the Native Lands Court, and several Maori chiefs, addressed the gathering in suitable terms. Natives and Europeans from all parts of the district gathered there to take part in the function, several hundreds being present. Before the .people dispersed tho gun was iircd, which brought to a close a most interesting event.
