Recent Earthquakes in Formosa.
Terrible Mortality and
Devastation

Sydney, Yesterday.
Newspapers have arrived by mail giving details of the terrible earthquakes experienced in the Japanese island of Formosa last March. The casualties are estimated thus: — Killed ... 1106 Injured 1862 Tho damage to dwellings is put as follows :—- Houses destroyed 3832 Houses partially destroyed 2121 Early on the morning of March 17th the inhabitants near Kagi were startled by several slight shocks, followed by a severe one, accompanied by subterranean explosions. Shocks continued at intervals of five to ten minutes all through that day and the following day, and abated on March 19th. An area of about thirty square miles was devastated. Tho surface was much cracked in all directions, and water spurted up several feet in some parts. The land subsided and lakes were formed in other places, exuding mud, which formed hillocks.
