FATALITY AT ROTORUA.

Man Overcome by Foul Gas

( By Telegraph— Press A ssociation.)

RoTonuA, Last Night,

Two men named Brady and Radford had been engaged in sinking a well about a milo from here. On resuming work this morning Brady was tho first to go down the well, and was immediately overcome by the foul gas and fell to the bottom. Ranford sought the assistance of Goodson Brothers and others. Fred Goodson went down the well to endeavour to get Brady up, but .he was no sooner down than ho too was overcome. Fortunately he had taken the precaution to put a rope round his body, and by this means was hauled to the surface. lie was unconscious, and remains so. He is under medical attendance. Sergeant Phair got Brady's body up with grappling irons. Life was extinct. The fumes from the well were overpowering. Brady was a single man, and it is believed that his parents reside at Otahuhu.

Goodson remained unconscious until 5 o'clock, but sinco then he has improved. Brady had only descended about 20 ft when he was overcome. It was lucky for Goodson that ho was hauled up so speedily. Had it been otherwise ho would have succumbed.
