WOOLSTON ORPHANAGE.
Matter Mentioned in Parliament
An Inquiry to Take Place
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
Wellington, This Day,
When the House met at 11 a.m., Mr T. H. Davey asked the Premier whether he had read the report of the meeting of the North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board, in which it was alleged that two young Catholic girls had been wrongfully treated.
Mr Seddon said he had read the report. There seemed to be good ground for enquiry, and in the interest of all parties concerned the Government would take steps to see that an inquiry was held.
[A Christchurch message, which we published on Thursday, stated that at the Charitable Aid Board meeting a report was submitted by the Institutions Committee in regard to the recent inquiry made into the conduct of the Matron of the Woolston Orphanage. The report recommended that a letter be sent to the Matron conveying the Board's strong disapproval of certain expressions admitted by her to have been used to Roman Catholic children, and forbidding any repetition of similar language. This clause was adopted by the Board.]
