CHARGE OF STABBING.

Accused Before the Court.

At about half-past ten, last night, a fruit hawker, named John Brauman, called at the Masterton Police Stalion and stated that he had been stabbed. The man was bleeding profusely from wounds on the arm, and was immediately taken to Dr. A. Hosking, who attended to his injuries. On enquiries being made by the police, it was found that Brauman had been mixed up in a brawl, in Cricket-street, and had been stabbed by an elderly man, named Alexander Smith. From particulars available, it appears that Smith went to the house, in which Brauman was living, and a dispute arose between the two. A scuffle ensued, during which Smith drew a knife, and made several stabs at Brauman, wounding him, as already slated. The latter then left the vicinity ; and, after he had done so, Smith quarrelled with a woman, named Kelliher, and ended by stab bing her also, inflicting a nasty flesh wound under the left ear. Other persons, who were in the vicinity, were attracted by the sounds of the altercation, and Mrs Kelliher was taken to Dr. Hosking's and her injuries attended to. It was found that the wound was not of a very serious nature, but the woman had lost a considerable quantity of blood.

On tho arrival of the police, Smith was arrested, but no knife was found in his possession, and, the weapon used, has not yet been discovered.

Smith was brought before Messrs E. McEwen and M. C. O'Connell, J's.P., this morning, and charged with assault, with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The police asked foi> a remand till Monday next, which was granted. Bail was allowed in accused's own recognisance of £50 and two sureties of £50 each.
