RETURN OF ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD.
Archbishop Redwood, who returned to Wellington from Rome - on Wednesday, spent two months in that city, and had several interviews with the Pope, who manifested great interest in New Zealand affairs, and was very gratified to learn of the progress of the Catholic Church in this part of the world. His Holiness goes about freely amongst the people, observing very little formality, and, the Archbishop adds, is very charming in his manner.
The Archbishop visited England and various parts of Ireland, including Armagh, where he saw the fine Cathedral which was opened just before his arrival. The condition of Ireland, he says, is vastly improving, as the result of the land legislation.
In reference to the position of the church in France, Archbishop Redwood states that Pope Pius is very hopeful that the situation will improve. . .
Dean Smyth, of Hastings, who accompanied Archbishop Redwood in his tour, mentions that in Rome he met Sir William and Lady Russell, who left for Europe" at the close of last session, He also met an ex-New Zealander, Mr Ignatius Loughnan, who is now living in Rome. Mr Loughnan, who is a cousin of Mr R. A. Loughnan, of Wellington, was formerly a resident of Hawke's Bay.
