MOUNT EGMONT RAILWAY.

(By Telegraph — Press Association), Stratford, Last Night

The first sod of the Mount Egmont branch railway was turned at Waipuku, to-day, by Mr W. T. Jennings, M.H.8., in the presence of about two hundred persons. Messrs C. E. Major and W. Symes, M's.H.R., the Mayors of Stratford and Hawera, the chairman of the Stratford County Council, and the chairman of the Normanby Town Board gave addresses. The sum of £5000 has been placed on the Estimates for the work, which will cost about £50,000. -The. line will run to the stone deposits on'the mountain, sufficient to supply the whole of Taranaki. It will, probably, be used for tourist traffic and local excursions.

A banquet was held after theceremony in Stratford.
