BAND NOTES.

IBY "MODEKATO."!

A meeting of the-Executive of the TSorth Island Band Association is to be held at an early date, when several new rules will be finally dealt with, in addition to other important business. The Danncvirke Band have decided to compete at the Hastings Contest in November, and, with a view to making a good show, have secured the services of Mr K. Cureen as Bandmaster and Conductor. Mr Cureen had charge of the Ashurst Band for some considerable time, and their playing was very favourably commented upon recently by a wellknown authority on Brass Bands. Mr Cureen a , so played solo cornet for the Palmerston Municipal Band at the Contest held there last March.

It is rumoured that the lluahinc Band have had some trouble lately, a number of their best men having left in consequence ; but 1 am pleased to say that the trouble has been adjusted, and matters arc again going ahead smoothly. They will be competing at Auckland Contest next year.

The many friends of Lieut. Herd will be pleased to hear of his appointment as musical judge for the West Coast and Southland Contests. Lieut. Herd was nominated for a similar position at the Hastings Contest, but has been compelled to forego the latter, owing to the dates for the Coast and Hastings clashing. It is understood that he has also been nominated for the position of judge at the New Plymouth Contest to beheld h/j New Year.

The departure of Bandmaster Sparks from Carterton has left a gap in the ranks of the Carterton Band that will not be easily filled. Mr Sparks was one of the most enthusiastic and energetic bandsmen in the district, and he worked hard for years, and almost the whole time without any monetary reward for his services, to bring the Band to a state of efficiency, and has had his efforts rewarded. The Carterten Band are different to-day to when he took charge, they having instruments and uniforms,

which are vested in the Council

The Nelson Garrison Band is again jjkg. without a conductor. Ooe of their 4 *f|p ; principal lneinbars attended the Marton Contest for the express purpose of securing the service of their former conductor, but without avail. Nelson possesses some good players, who are connected with various musical organisations, and ara therefore in a proficient state musically. The Waipawa Band (Hawke's Bay) have re-organised, recently. The absence of the Cosgrove Bros. (i 5) left them in a bad way, but they having returned to their native land, the Band has again livened up considerably, so much so, that they are now rehearsing the test selection, which they propose playing at the Hastings Contest. Mr B. J. Cosgrove is conducting. Mr. J. J. Cosgrove, solo cornet, played at Masterton Contest vri'h local Band, and also his brother Jack, baritone, who is now on the euphonium in "Waipawa Band.
