COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT.
Te Whiti- Riding.—Waingawa Protective Works. —A substantial stone groin has been constructed where the river encroached on the northern bank, between the road and the railway bridge. The existing groins have also been repaired and strengthened on the same bank; a depression has also been raised with boulders to prevent the overflow in flood.
Waingawa to Camp-road. — Surface repairs.—ll7 cubic yards of shingle has been laid between the Borough boundary and the bridge.
Te Whiti road — from Masterton to Gladstone-road. —Tenders for the formation of 46*6 chains were invited to close at noon, of the sth inst. As no tenders were received to time, they were extended to the Bth inst.
Contract No. 31.—1 have instructed the contractor to proceed forthwith with the formation and metalling of Masterton • Gladstone ■ road, which haS. been in abeyance during the months.
Upper Taueru Biding.—Mangarairoad. —Contract No. 19 (one mile of formation, etc.) —Some three-fifths of the work was completed on my visit of inspection, on the 31st ult. Progress has been checked, owing to the accident which occurred to one of the workmen, and which terminated fatally. The contractor, with a gang of four men, has again resumed work.
Contract No. 20. —Eighty cha : ns of formation of biidge, etc. —Good headway is being made with this contract, which was commenced in the beginning of August. The bulk of the ground has been broken on a length of 50 chains.
Wainuioru Biding.— Letts-road. —■ The fencing of 20-61 chains is near completion. Fcrnyhursfc ■ Stronyar - road. —As directed by the Council, I have examined that portion of the road referred to, as dangerous, by Mr Armstrong's, and beg to report as follows : —The road is unmetalled, and is subject to wheel ruts in the winter. These can only be effectually repaired after the dry weather sets in. In my opinion there is approaching danger along this which is traverse! weekly by the mail coach.
Blairlogie-East Coast-road. — Mangapokio Bridge. — Contract No. 16.— I have made the final inspection of the above contract, and find that the work has been finished satisfactorily. The earthwork approaches are completed, ami the bridge has been open to traffic foi , the past month.
Opaki Biding.— Lansdowne-road.— Contract No. 85 (sanding and forming 25 chains of footpath).—The work is practically completed. Pairau i-oad. —The unformed length on the Hawkhurst frontage has been formed by the grader. The necessary dressing to the sidewidths on the Upper Plain-road have been done by the grader. Alfredton Riding. —Castle Hill-road. —89 chains ot formation has been duly completed, and taken off the contractor's bands.
It has been necessary to strengthen the retaining wall, at the wash-out, on Alpass' frontage, by the construction of an embankment at the base. The report was adopted. -4flr
